The Bridal Trousseau of Deokhye, the Last Princess of the Joseon Royal Family
2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea. To celebrate this milestone as well as our 20th anniversary, Kyushu National Museum is showing about 20 cultural properties in our collection that trace the history of Korea, from the ancient kingdoms of Baekje and Silla, through the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, to modern times.
This Special Display features some newly acquired works. One is a landscape painting masterpiece from the early Joseon dynasty (1392–1907), Autumn landscape emulating the style of Guo Xi, and the other is a celadon cup and saucer with chrysanthemums, among the most beautiful porcelain sets produced during the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392). History shines a spotlight on the bridal trousseau of Princess Deokhye (1912–1989), the daughter of Emperor Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon dynasty. Passed down by the Sō family of Tsushima, items from her trousseau are on display for the first time in Japan.

“Deokhye, the Last Princess of the Joseon Royal Family”
Buffeted by the winds of the turbulent 20th century in both Japan and Korea, Princess Deokhye was the last surviving member of the Joseon royal family. Our Special Display showcases pieces from her bridal trousseau for the first time in Japan.
