Rental Facilities (Teahouse)

茶室

Kyushu National Museum’s teahouse facilities comprises two teahouses and a modest Japanese garden. The larger teahouse, Hōman-tei, is used to host events, while the smaller tearoom, Kichō-an, provides visitors an opportunity to learn more about the world of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.

Construction: Single-story wood house, 2 tatami rooms (8 tatami mats and 4 tatami mats respectively)
This space can be used for events introducing traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and other aspects of traditional Japanese culture.

This teahouse is for display only, and cannot be used to host any events.


Usage Guidelines

Opening hours

  • The tearoom is closed every Monday. (In the event that a public holiday falls on a Monday, the tearoom will be open that day and closed the following day.)

  • Kicho-an and the tearoom garden are not available for booking.
  • Rental fees for the space are applicable once your reservation has been processed. 50% of the total fee will be refunded in the event of cancellation up to one week (7 days) before the day of usage as stated in the application. Late cancellations (within 6 days of the usage date) are not eligible for refunds.

Please get in touch with us via phone to apply for rental. We accept reservations from four months before the intended rental date.

Museum-organised tours of the tearoom (volunteer-led)

Application Please sign up at the volunteer counter on the first floor of the museum, in front of the Ajippa Interactive Exhibition Gallery. Signups are on a first-come-first-served basis, and are open from 12:00–14:00. Please note that Please get in touch with the Cultural Exchange Division at least 10 days before your intended visit. We will liaise with our volunteers and follow up individually.

Fees Free
Route Tours begin from the first floor of the museum. Participants will tour the exterior of the museum building once, and then be led to the teahouse and Japanese garden for an overview of the facilities. The tour concludes upon returning to the first floor of the museum.
  • We request that visitors refrain from wearing stilettos and high-heeled shoes to the tearoom to avoid damage to the grounds of the tearoom complex. Visitors who wish to enter Hōman-tei are required to wear socks when entering the space.
  • In the event of inclement weather on Tuesdays and Fridays, areas open to visitors may be restricted.
  • Visitors may experience a large number of insects on the tearoom grounds in summer.
