A Great Gathering of the Hosomi Collection
at Kyushu National Museum

The Hosomi Museum in Kyoto has a vast collection centering on antique art acquired by Hosomi Ryo (also known as Kokoan, 1901–79). Handed down to his son Minoru (1922–2006) and grandson Yoshiyuki (1954–), it was built up over about 80 years by 3 generations of the Hosomi family. This Special Exhibition showcases a selection of masterpieces from the Hosomi Museum’s collection, often called a “textbook of Japanese art.” Its exhibits range from shiny golden Buddhist artifacts that captivated Hosomi Ryo and tea kettles celebrated as masterpieces of iron art to Edo-period (1603–1867) works by Rimpa school painters (like Ito Jakuchu, Sakai Hoitsu, and Suzuki Kiitsu) passionately collected by Hosomi Minoru. We invite you to come and immerse yourself in the essence of Japanese art, as well as to discover the story of how this collection of antique art was acquired.

Cute, beautiful – this collection has it all!
