Journey to Mexico @ Kyuhaku
Kyushu National Museum’s annual Exchange Student Event returns this year on Culture Day (3 November). Catch a lively show of dancing skeletons, join a guided tour of our Special Exhibition Hall in simple Japanese, and make your very own DIY sugar skull keychain! We hope that these three activities will give you a window of opportunity to learn more about the work that our museum does.
Carpe diem – these dancing skeletons are a cheery reminder to seize the day. After the dance performance, enjoy a guided tour of our latest Special Exhibition Ancient Mexico in simple Japanese, before making your very own DIY sugar skull keychain keychain. Experience the vibrant colors of Mexico. Only at Kyuhaku!

① Program and Kyuhaku introduction (13:00~13:15・15 minutes)
② Dancing Skeletons! (13:30~14:00・30 minutes)
③ Guided tour of Special Exhibition Hall in simple Japanese (14:10~15:10・60 minutes)
④ Sugar skull keychain DIY (15:20~16:20・60 minutes)
* Please note that participants will be split into two groups of 10 to prevent
congestion during the guided tour of the Special Exhibit.
* This event will be conducted in Japanese, with interpretation (EL/CH/KR) provided
accordingly.

② Dancing Skeletons! (30 minutes)
Observed every year on 1 and 2 November, the Day of the Dead is an important Mexican tradition dating back thousands of years. Through joyous festivities, the living honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed. Who says skeletons have to be scary, or gloomy? Carpe diem – these fun, dancing skeletons are a cheery reminder to seize the day, and a loving homage to the deceased. Don’t miss this special performance!
③ Guided tour of Special Exhibition Hall in simple Japanese (60 minutes)
The Special Exhibition Ancient Mexico introduces the ancient civilizations of Mexico with a focus on the Maya, Aztec, and Teotihuacan civilizations. With our researchers’ explanations in simple Japanese, explore the unique worldviews behind the deep mysteries and fascinating appeal of ancient Mexico’s civilizations.
④ Sugar skull keychain DIY (60 minutes)
During Day of the Dead celebrations, colorful papel picado flags, calavera skeletons, and marigolds can be found in every corner of every town. Brightly colored sugar skulls are especially popular with both children and adults, both as decoration and as a delicious treat. During the activity, you will get to experience this Mexican folk art by making your own DIY sugar skull keychain accessory!
