4만 년 전의 빙하기로 떠나는 시간 여행

빙하기, 특히 4만 년 전의 빙기에는 혹독한 추위 속에서 인류와 함께 매머드 등 거대 동물들이 살았습니다.
이들 중 일부는 멸종을 맞이했지만, 지금까지 살아 남은 종도 있습니다.
특별전 《빙하기: 인류가 본 4만 년 전의 세계》에서는 빙하기를 살았던 동물과 인류의 모습을 알기 쉽게 설명하고 그 운명을 가른 비밀을 파헤칩니다.
특히 이번 전시에서는 네안데르탈인과 크로마뇽인의 실물 머리뼈를 일본 최초로 공개하고, 더불어 빙하기 거대동물의 생체 복원 모형을 선보입니다. 전시실에서 그 크기를 실감해 보세요.
4만 년 전의 빙하기가 지금 눈 앞에 펼쳐집니다.
＊빙하기: 땅을 넓게 덮고 있는 얼음덩어리인 빙상이 확대된 시기.
춥고 빙상이 크게 확대하는 시기인 ‘빙기’와 비교적 따뜻하고 빙상이 후퇴하는 ‘간빙기’로 나뉘며 이 빙기와 간빙기는 약 10만 년 주기로 번갈아 반복되고 있다.

빙하기 유럽의 동물들

인류에 맞선 거대동물

빙하기에 유럽 북부는 빙상으로 뒤덮여 있었으며, 중앙부는 건조한 초원 지대가 펼쳐져 있었습니다. 이러한 초원 지대에는 빙하기 거대동물이라 불리는 대형 동물들이 살았습니다.
어떤 거대동물이 존재했으며, 가혹한 환경을 어떻게 헤쳐 나갔을까요?
그리고 거대동물 가운데 멸종을 맞이한 종과, 지금까지 살아 남은 종은 무엇이 있을까요?

네안데르탈인과 크로마뇽인

일본 최초 공개!
「세계에서 가장 유명한 머리뼈」

빙하기를 살았던 두 인류, 네안데르탈인과 크로마뇽인(호모 사피엔스). 두 인류의 실제 두개골을 일본 최초로 공개합니다.
네안데르탈인은 다부진 체격에 강인한 근육을 지닌 데 비해, 크로마뇽인은 비교적 체격이 왜소하며 긴 팔과 다리를 지녔습니다.
두 인류는 같은 시대를 살았지만, 이중 네안데르탈인은 4만 년 전에 그 모습을 감추었습니다.
대체 무엇이 둘의 운명을 갈라놓았을까요?

빙하기의 일본 열도

빙하기, 인류가 일본 열도에 첫 발을 내딛다

남쪽과 북쪽으로 길게 뻗은 일본 열도에는 다양한 환경이 펼쳐져 있습니다. 일본 열도에 인류가 이주한 시기는 늦어도 마지막 빙기인 약 3만 8천 년 전으로 추정됩니다. 일본의 3대 멸종 거대동물(나우만코끼리, 시노메가케로스 야베이, 하나이즈미 바이슨) 등 마지막 빙기의 동물들은 어떤 모습이었을까요? 그리고 일본 열도에 살았던 빙하기의 인류는 어떤 생활을 했을까요?
