Special Exhibition
Celebrating the 270th Anniversary of His Birth
Nagasawa Rosetsu
Life, Legacy, and Boundless Imagination
Popular artist Nagasawa Rosetsu was active in Kyoto in the late 18th century. Well-known as an eccentric painter, Rosetsu’s work is now highly acclaimed, both within and beyond Japan.
This winter, a full-scale exhibition tracing the steps of Rosetsu’s development as an artist is coming to Kyushu for the first time. Featuring carefully selected pieces spanning his entire career, it includes his most vaunted work, the fusuma door panels of Dragon and Tiger (Kushimoto Ōkyo Rosetsu Art Museum, Wakayama Prefecture). Visit, observe and appreciate how Rosetsu’s bold, masterful brushwork expresses his unique, unconventional ideas.
Also on display are masterpieces by Rosetsu’s contemporaries, who make guest appearances here: Itō Jakuchū, Maruyama Ōkyo, Ike no Taiga and Yosa Buson. Enter the world of Kyoto’s 18th-century painters, whose competition for recognition fired up their creative energies.
