Exchange Student Event 2025
「Multi-Lingual Tea Ceremony!」
Each year at Kyushu National Museum, we declare 3 November – otherwise known as Culture Day – “Exchange Student Day,” on which we offer a variety of events for those studying abroad in Japan. This year, with commentary in Easy Japanese and multi-lingual interpretation, we’re taking a deep dive into the world of sadō, or the tea ceremony! Led by a local expert, you’ll be able to enjoy learning about everything from tea ceremony procedures and the history of the ceremony to the layouts of tea rooms and the various tea-making tools. Plus, what tea ceremony would be complete without a tasting of tea and sweets?

② Multi-Lingual Tea Ceremony! (90 minutes)
Step inside a real tearoom and join an expert in sadō for an introduction to the world of the Japanese tea ceremony. Once you’ve learned about tea-drinking culture and the tools used to prepare tea, you’ll be able to try your hand at making a cup for yourself, using authentic matcha and accompanied by real Japanese sweets!
③ Appreciating the Ancient: Kyuhaku’s Tea Bowls (30 minutes)
After experiencing a tea ceremony for yourself, take a deeper dive into the history of the
practice and discover some of the tea bowls in our collection. Hear from the researcher in
charge of these timeless artifacts (used for actual, historical tea ceremonies!), then
explore our Cultural Exchange Exhibition Hall and ask any burning questions. Plus, don’t
miss “Cultural Properties in 8K: A Hands-On Look at Legendary Tea Bowls,” our exclusive
experience allowing you to appreciate iconic tea bowls from whatever angle you’d
like!
