An Introduction to Japanese Tea Ceremonies

This experience is designed for junior high schoolers and above who have never participated in a traditional tea ceremony before. Please feel free to join us!

Event outline

1. Introduction to the tearoom space
2. Tea ceremony experience

i. Watch a demonstration of a ceremonial preparation of the tea (otemae)
ii. Whisk your own bowl of green tea and enjoy it with a traditional Japanese sweet (ocha-gashi)
*Ocha-gashi are generally split into two categories: higashi (dry sweets) and omo-gashi (fresh sweets). Usucha (thin matcha tea) can be served with either kind of sweet, but koicha (thick matcha tea) is only served with omo-gashi. Participants in this specific event will be served koicha and omo-gashi.

Fees

1000 yen per person, 500 yen for middle school students
*Please make payment on the day itself, and bring the exact amount if possible.

Eligibility

Middle school students and above who are unfamiliar with Japanese tea ceremonies, adults and foreigners welcome
*Please note that we are unable to accommodate people who want to watch the tea ceremony only, and not participate.

Notes

  1. Please bring a handkerchief and a clean pair of white socks. You will need to change into these socks when you enter the teahouse.
  2. Please come directly to the teahouse at least 5 minutes before your allocated time slot.
  3. Please notify us in advance if you have any food allergies or sensitivities.
